Company: The Daily Californian
Project: Print layout redesigns
Time: Spring 2011, Spring 2012
Details:
- Redesign #1: I assisted in the 2011 redesign. At the time, the print paper was last redesigned in 2002 and rumored to be done hastily and without much input. As a result, my colleague and I enlisted in our peers’ valued opinions before finalizing the redesign. Our main goal was to make the physical paper a more aesthetic experience. The biggest changes included more spacing between text, larger photos, and the reworking of section heads and look-insides.
- Redesign #2: I led the 2012 redesign in order for the paper to transition from tabloid to broadsheet. I surveyed staff and conducted research before finalizing the redesign. I also trained the design staff for the transition and created a design manual. The transition to broadsheet attracted many advertisers and saved the company a lot of money.
